Yeah, Gen 5 is a couple years old but since I've more or less started this Afterthoughts series, I might be uploading my thoughts on some other older stuff as well. My last couple were for very recent things like Frozen and Godzilla. This time, I want to give my thoughts on one of my favorite characters from Pokemon, N.

Anyone who has played Black and White or read my Pokemon White stories know how much N has endeared himself to me. There's very little I don't like about him and it's generally his attitude on trainers. However, that works out to Gen 5's favor because the whole point was to make you think about what being a trainer means to you. I've played Pokemon since the beginning, starting with Pokemon Yellow. I've since played a game in every region except Hoenn (which I plan to fix with Alpha Sapphire) and in every generation except Gen 3. Gen 5 succeeded in making me step back and really look at what I was doing. N was the vehicle that got my mind thinking. Now, there are some people for whom each game's story doesn't mean much to them but when it comes to people like me, the story is what make the games enjoyable. Gen 5's story for B&W is one of those that brings up the very relevant question of what Pokemon battles are and doubles as a Take That to PETA, who we all know are a massively hypocritical bunch who need to have their right to exist revoked.

I sympathized with N's point of view because, having watched some of the anime growing up, I was well aware there are bad trainers out there in the various Pokemon media. My first encounter with such a trainer was in the early episode, Charmander - The Stray Pokemon. The real world issue of dog fights also comes to mind because like that are the reason pit bulls are currently the face of "vicious breeds" this decade. However, a majority of the time, I equate Pokemon battles to sports like boxing and wrestling. In both that and in Pokemon battles, you don't fight to kill. You fight to knock out. That was where I disagreed with N's ideology.

N had a tendency to lump all trainers in the same group because that was the ideology he was raised with after Ghetsis found him. Instead of getting really annoyed by it, I instead used it to define my own thoughts about my various teams over the years. In spite of it all, my thoughts never changed. I'm one of those people who gets attached to her Pokemon and I see them as my friends, just as N does. I don't battle to hurt either my team or the other's Pokemon. I fight to make them stronger so they can feel good about themselves. I'm not the same as the jackasses in this world who force a number of animals into rings and make them fight rather brutally. Rather sentimental for a woman who is turning 27 in less than two months but I don't think I could ever stop liking or playing Pokemon or stopping thinking how I do. N put it out on the table and really made me come to the conclusion I've probably thought all my life when it came to Pokemon. My teams are my friends, I take care of them, and I battle to feel a sense of accomplishment.

Another thing about N is that I personally see him as my actual rival more than the boss of a villainous team. We fight him more than another team leader, his personality and goals are entirely different than previous leaders, and he was merely a puppet to Ghetsis who I feel is the true leader of Team Plasma because he fits the bill set by Giovanni. N may be somewhat extreme in his views but not once did he ever tell you to stop. Instead, he chose you to keep walking the path you choose, Truth or Ideals based on what version you have. Having been raised with his ideology, coming across you and your Pokemon threw a whole bunch of grey on his black and white world. It confused and may have angered him, depending on how you read him, so N largely left you alone while he continued his own journey, with some battles here and there. I think, in his own way, N was asking for your help in understanding how the world really works. I don't believe in any of his battles (except the final battle), he was actually giving his all because of how he thought. The final battle was N reaching the pinnacle of frustration and desire to make sense of all the grey. He had you put it all on the table and give it everything you had to help him see that such extreme views on the world make for a unhappy person.

Half the time, I think N was operating independently from Team Plasma in some of the encounters later on in the game. Mainly because the impression I got was that his travels were introducing so much grey into his black and white world that his primary mission was put on the back burner as he tried to puzzle things out. He came across as less interested in forcing people to turn their Pokemon loose than he was figuring out how the world actually worked. His locating the opposite dragon of the version mascot was in line with Ghetsis's plan, though, and was probably the only objective in his original mission that he focused on. Fitting since he intended to make it a battle between legends to see if Truth or Ideals was stronger. Ghetsis's goal for either Zekrom or Reshiram was quite simple by comparison. When you have two powerful Pokemon representing ambiguous and intertwined schools of thought, controlling just one could potentially get the masses to follow your way of thinking. It's better for a person like N, utterly innocent in heart, to control that Pokemon who represents whichever N follows in either version. What Ghetsis knew and probably tried to keep from him is that Truth and Ideals are both equal and are one and the same. What your ideals are becomes your truth and your truth is merely the culmination of your ideals. I conveyed my train of thought into my White story by having Raye teach N that a black and white worldview is not the best way to live in a grey world. Him possible acting independently from Team Plasma is another reason I consider him my rival over Cheren and Bianca. He's got more in common with the various rivals in the series than he does his predecessors like Giovanni or Cyrus.

That's pretty much all I wanted to say on this subject. Feel free to share your thoughts.
